The Network was set up in October 2003 and now has over 30 member groups from across Suffolk. Between them, these members plan to screen more than 300 films a year to audiences that don't have ready access to commercial cinemas.
The Network began as an initiative by arts officers from Suffolk's local authorities, responding to research that showed access to cinema was unevenly spread across this rural county. Screen East commissioned a feasibility study (which can be downloaded from the document library) and the Network was established along the lines recommended: an association of community groups, managed by a voluntary committee.
In early 2004 funding was secured to buy two touring sets of digital projection equipment. A third set of equipment was added in early 2005.
