Archive Films

Working with the SDCN, alongside the Suffolk Record Office and Library Service, we put together a programme of archive shows that kicked off in October with the Classic Archive Film Festival. These events ran in parallel to others all over the region, as part of EAFA’s ‘Archive Flicks in the Six’ outreach project.

The archive produced 5 DVD compilations for the festival, representing different areas of Suffolk. Films included such diverse subjects such as flint knapping in Brandon in the 1960s, the holiday resort of Felixstowe in the 1950s, USAAF Honington during the Second World War and Southwold Narrow Gauge Railway. We also provided several longer documentaries, including ‘Gone West Out East’, a light hearted look at American cultural influences in the region – from saddle makers to Country and Western bands!

Initially we thought groups might select one DVD or documentary to watch as short before watching a main feature film, so we were delighted that some SDCN groups opted for a whole evening of archive entertainment! EAFA film show presenter Stewart Orr travelled to some of the groups with his 16mm film projector and provided a live commentary to some of the shows.

Although, this project is coming to an end, it is not the end of EAFA’s digital presence. At the end of August 2011, EAFA will launch its online Digital Film Archive. Visitors to the website will be able to watch 1000 EAFA films for free. We hope SDCN members will be amongst the first to visit the site!
