Freqently Asked Questions

For more information on the scheme read our FAQs below and then refer to the SDCN website for detailed information about becoming a member plus all you need to know about how to plan and run a cinema event.

How do we become part of the Suffolk Digital Cinema Network (SDCN)?

To run SDCN in your community you need to be a properly constituted not-for-profit organization, based in Suffolk.

Is our venue suitable?

- Your hall will need to be at least 30ft from front to back (the width is usually less important)

- Have adequate space for a cinema screen (15ft clearance)

- You should be able to black out your venue during screenings

- There must be access to at least one 13amp mains socket.

- You will need adequate public liability insurance and the correct licences for cinema screenings.

How do we programme and book films?

The screening of films for entertainment purposes outside the cinema and home constitutes a public performance and requires permission from the copyright holder (the film studios) and there is a copyright licence fee for every screening. The arrangement of the licence will be your responsibility and is covered on the licensing page.

Booking a film

You can choose and book your films independently. In order to do this you will need to research which films you would like to screen, ascertain who owns the copyright for the film, order and arrange delivery. The majority of films can be obtained from Filmbank. Other film distributors include The British Film Institute and Eros. See Choosing Films section for more info.

What does it cost to programme films independently?

Prices vary but if you wish to book through Filmbank you will need to open an account which will cost £150 (this is refundable when you close your account). For every film screened you will be charged on average 35% of the ticket income (or a minimum of £75), £14 P&P, plus VAT. See Choosing Films section for more info.

How much does it cost to hire the cinema equipment?

Loan of cinema equipment to member groups costs just £24 per annum if you screen less than 12 films a year or £70 if more.
