Films can be screened in a number of aspect ratios. (Aspect ratio is the relationship between picture height and width: eg, cinemascope ratio is 2.33:1; for every 1m picture is high it will be 2.33m wide). Most commercial DVDs state the ratio on the box. If not, the best method is to try the picture on all the different setting to decide which looks best. To check up on a film's correct ratio you can look on www.imdb.com. Type in the film's name; on its page there is a menu on the left. Go to 'technical specifications' and this will tell you the correct ratio. If you are still in doubt, please call the Network's technical support on 01986 873836 or 0791 8020239.
Using the DVD player's remote control you can adjust the image's aspect ratio to the correct setting. To do this you must ensure that there is no disc playing.
(1) Press display on the DVD remote; a menu appears. Go to the bottom icon (a toolbox) and press enter (the centre of the toggle switch).
(2) Select custom, then press enter. First up is the language menu that enables you to add subtitles in various languages - and, often, English subtitles for the hearing-impaired. Press enter if you want to use this facility.
(3) Otherwise, go down the icons to the TV icon. Press enter.
(4) TV type will appear. Press enter.
(5) You can then change the aspect ratio to one of either 16:9, 4:3 letterbox or 4:3 pan and scan by moving the toggle switch up or down. When you have chosen the ratio you want press enter
(6) Press display until you exit all menus.
You can also change the aspect ratio with the projector's remote control using the aspect button. Press this and you can swap between 4:3, 16:9 and small. Make sure that the DVD player and the projector are set to the same aspect ratio!
Some films will only be available on video; however it is easy to fix up your own video machine to the projector. To get an image use the yellow lead (marked video) and plug into the socket on projector marked video in, and into the socket marked video out on your video recorder. To connect your video player to the amplifier, use the DVD sound lead (two plugs) and plug them into same amp sockets you would use if connecting the DVD player. Plug the other end into the two audio out sockets at the rear of your video recorder.
